Remote Export Control via Cloud Tethering Technology

Project Overview

Location: Residential Property with Shed/Workshop

System Type: 2-Phase Supply with Solar PV Installation

Inverter Setup: 2 × 10kW Single Phase Inverters (Goodwe MS G3)

Export Limit: 5kW total site export

This property consists of two-phase power to the main switchboard (MSB) in the house and two-phase power to a shed/workshop sub-board, where the solar PV system is being installed. The shed is approximately 40m from the house, presenting a unique challenge for managing export limits and compliance requirements.

Challenge: Ensuring Compliance & Optimising Energy Use

With strict Victorian emergency backstop compliance and export limiting requirements, the installer needed a solution that could:

• Maintain a 5kW export limit

• Ensure compliance with Victoria’s emergency backstop regulations.

• Enable smart energy management by dynamically controlling loads on-site.

• Utilise Wi-Fi-based control for seamless system integration between the house and shed.
  

Given the distance between the house MSB and the shed sub-board, a cloud-based control solution was preferred over traditional hardwired options.

Solution: CATCH Control for Smart Solar Management

To meet the export limitation and compliance requirements, the following CATCH Power solution was implemented:

2 × CATCH Control units – One for each Goodwe MS G3 inverter to manage individual inverters. 1 × 6-Channel Device installed at the MSB –  this device will monitor both phases and communicate over Wi-Fi with both inverters, ensuring inverters comply to the export limitations of the property. Wi-Fi Communication Network – All devices were connected via Wi-Fi, allowing seamless integration and real-time adjustments.

This setup enabled dynamic control of the inverters while also optimising energy consumption by prioritising on-site loads such as Hot water heating and EV charging.

Results: Efficiency & Compliance Achieved

Full compliance with Victoria’s emergency backstop and export limits.  Optimised self-consumption, reducing reliance on grid electricity. *Seamless remote control over inverters and key household loads.* Future-proof system for evolving DNSP regulations.
